For this first installment, we're interviewing our CEO, Jess!
L&C: Hello! To start, tell us your name and what your business is.
Jess: Hey there, my name is Jess. I'm the CEO of Lilac and Clover Soap Co. We make handcrafted natural, vegan bar soap and also provide education and knowledge to aspiring cosmetics makers in Canada.
L&C: Tell us how it all began for you.
Jess: I was never one of those people who knew they wanted to be an entrepreneur or run their own business. But the longer I worked a regular job, the more I longed for meaningful work and helping others. I also thrive under a flexible schedule with ample vacation time, and I would love to have the ability to work from anywhere in the world!
I started Lilac and Clover back in 2017 because of my passion for natural body products and plant based lifestyle, and also because I love chemistry and science experiments. It's been so fun meeting other female entrepreneurs and supporting each other.
LC University grew out of this initial business idea as I had a really hard time finding reputable, easy to digest information out there when I was first starting out.
L&C: What are your favorite tools for working smarter, not harder?
Jess: I love using technology to make my life easier. I love to write things down and capture ideas in Planoly and my physical notebook document. My favorite apps are Planoly, Canva, and of course Instagram!
L&C: Tell us about a big fail you had and what you learned from it?
Jess: I was making our Root Beer Soda soap bar and was using a brand new mix of essential oils that actually smell like root beer!! Sometimes adding fragrances to soap can cause the batter to seize up quickly or can change the consistency. I had never had experience with either of these so was totally not expecting it when the soap batter did both of these things!! I had to rush to smooth out the soap and get it into its mold before it became as hard as a rock!
In the end, the soap didn't quite turn out how I wanted it to, but I learned from the experience and was prepared the next time I attempted to try this recipe again. Sometimes things take time, or trial and error to figure out, and that's OK. As long as you're learning from it, it's worth it!
L&C: Who do you look up to in business, or in life?
Jess: I love Rachel Hollis, Kathrin Zenkina, and James Wedmore. I also look up to my fellow Thrive Mastermind ladies in Calgary so much!!
L&C: How do you celebrate your wins?
Jess: I'm trying to get better at taking time to celebrate the little and big wins. I do try to take a moment to be grateful for what I've accomplished so far, and for big wins, I love to treat myself to a spa treatment, a long walk along the river, or a day to relax on the couch and watch funny TV shows like Brooklyn Nine-Nine or The Office.
L&C: What advice would you give someone just starting out?
Jess: I would suggest they get really clear on their why, their values, and their goals for starting a business. Once you have these solidified, it makes your direction so much clearer.
Besides that, I would suggest to take your time to research, learn, and implement as you go. You don't need to have everything figured out right at the beginning, or to have a perfectly curated Instagram feed. These things all take practice, but don't worry, you will get there soon!
If you're ready to learn and grow today, feel free to reach out to me, and we can work together to create the business you've been dreaming of!
L&C: Where's the best place to learn more about you?
